A wave changes the weight. Compensation changes it back.
A load cell measures force, not mass. When a vessel heaves, pitches or rolls, the deck accelerates and a standard scale shows a number that keeps jumping. Marine scales measure that motion and correct for it in real time, so the display settles on the true weight – fast enough to keep up with catch handling.

What is a marine scale?
A marine scale is a weighing instrument designed to give accurate results on a moving vessel. It corrects for the accelerations caused by waves and vessel motion, and it is built from corrosion-resistant materials such as AISI 316 stainless steel to survive salt water and daily washdown.
Why can't I use a normal scale on a ship?
A load cell measures force, not mass. When the deck accelerates up or down, the force on the scale changes, so a standard scale shows a jumping or wrong value. In a swell the error can easily reach several percent. A motion-compensated scale removes that error.
How does motion compensation work?
A marine scale continuously registers how the vessel moves and corrects the weighing result in real time – including the effect of tilt and of gravity at the place of use. The result is a stable, repeatable reading while the deck is moving, without slowing down the work.
Which WPL scale do I need?
Samples and laboratory work up to 6 kg: the M3 scientific marine scale. Catch, boxes and packing up to 400 kg: the M2 series. Tubs, pallets and bulk up to 3,000 kg: the M5 flip-up or M6 platform scale. Registering and labelling catches: the R50 catch label system.
Are WPL marine scales certified?
WPL holds NMi certificates EK-5417 and CE-284. Whether a scale must be verified for legal-for-trade use depends on your application and national rules. Tell us how the scale will be used and we will advise on the right configuration.
Can weighing data go to my own software?
Yes. With WeightControl every weighing is logged on the scale. Data can be exported as CSV or PDF, and the API provides live weight, stability, presets and logs in JSON – for catch-management software, spreadsheets or your own systems.
